Itinerary

1

Day 1: Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Machu Picchu

Pickup at 06:30 AM (04:00 AM from Cusco, 06:00 AM from Ollantaytambo/Urubamba). Walk to the Ollantaytambo train station. 1h30m train ride to Km 104 (2,050 m / 6,725 ft), start of the trail. After showing original passports and crossing the checkpoint, we hike approximately 4 hours to the Inca site Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft) with many breaks to enjoy spectacular views. After exploring the site, time for box lunch. Continue 1 more hour to Inti Punku / Sun Gate (2,720 m / 8,923 ft) for the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu (2,400 m / 7,874 ft). Walk down to Machu Picchu and take the bus to Aguas Calientes for dinner and overnight. Option to visit the thermal springs. Trekking distance: 14 km / 8.69 miles. Aguas Calientes: 2,040 m / 6,692 ft.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu

Wake up early, breakfast at the hotel and take one of the first buses to Machu Picchu. It is well worth arriving early because the Inca City is quietest in the early morning, with time for photos and sunrise. Your guide will take you to the classic photo spot with a terrific view of the whole complex. Then a guided tour of Machu Picchu, learning about its history and seeing the most important buildings and temples. Afterwards, bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch, train to Ollantaytambo, and private car to your hotel in Cusco. Total distance by bus: 6 km / 3.37 miles. Machu Picchu altitude: 2,400 m / 7,874 ft.
